Overview

In mid-June I was waiting for some parts to arrive for the Firecat and got completely stuck on that project. So, in the meantime, I decided to build a small electric craft out of the scraps and leftovers from my last two projects. I drew up some plans and the Stingray came together very quickly, taking only 5 weeks to complete. All I have left to do is attach the skirt (constructed from a white garbage bag) and connect the electronics. I am using the electronics and motors from the Viper hovercraft in this craft. I haven't flown the Viper in a long time and new electronics (speed controllers in particular) are fairly expensive. I am also using 2350mAh AA cell NiMH batteries instead of the massive 2500mAh C cell NiCd batteries I used on the Viper. So, in effect the Stingray crams the same power plant as the Viper into a package that weighs 2.5 lbs less (Stingray weighs 3.5 lbs compared to Viper's 6lbs.) Since I have the same lift and propulsion but just over half the weight, I am expecting Stingray to perform a lot better than Viper. Check back soon for more pictures and videos of the Stingray's first flight.
